Knowledge About SPD
- What Is a Surge Protective Device (SPD)?
A surge protection device (also called SPD) is a component of the electrical installation protection system.
This device is connected in parallel on the power supply circuit of the loads that it must protect, but it can also be used at all levels of the power supply network.
This is the most commonly used and most efficient type of overvoltage protection.
- Type 1 vs Type 2 vs Type 3 SPD
Surge Protective Devices (SPD) are designed to protect electrical installations from transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes or switching operations in the power network. By diverting surge currents safely to earth, SPDs reduce the voltage to a level that electrical equipment can safely withstand.
According to international standards, three main types of SPDs are used in low-voltage electrical systems: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.
The appropriate type depends on the installation environment, system configuration, and the level of protection required.
• Type 1 SPD
Type 1 surge protective devices are typically installed at the main electrical distribution board of buildings equipped with lightning protection systems. They are designed to discharge large lightning currents entering from the power supply and prevent them from damaging the electrical installation. Type 1 SPDs are generally used together with Type 2 devices to provide complete protection.
• Type 2 SPD
Type 2 SPDs are installed in sub-distribution panels to protect electrical circuits from residual lightning surges and switching overvoltages. They provide effective surge protection for most electrical installations and are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial systems.
• Type 3 SPD
Type 3 SPDs provide fine protection for sensitive equipment such as electronic devices, communication systems, and control equipment. They are usually installed close to the protected equipment and are used in combination with upstream Type 2 SPDs to ensure optimal protection.
- Do Solar Systems Need Surge Protection
Surge protection is a small part of an overall solar panel array installation; yet, it is an integral component that can’t be ignored. Like every other electrical device out there, solar panels are prone to sudden voltages increases that can damage their internal components.
- How to Choose the Right SPD?
Selecting the correct surge protective device depends on the installation location, system voltage, and required protection level. The following factors help determine the appropriate SPD for your electrical or solar system.
1. Choose the SPD Type
| SPD Type | Installation Location | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Type 1 SPD | Main distribution board | Buildings with lightning protection systems |
| Type 2 SPD | Sub-distribution board | Electrical distribution panels |
| Type 3 SPD | Equipment protection | Sensitive electronic devices |
| DC SPD | Solar DC circuits | Solar PV systems |
2. Check the System Voltage
Select an SPD that matches the voltage of your electrical system.
| System Type | Recommended SPD |
|---|---|
| 230V / 400V AC | AC Surge Protective Device |
| 600V / 1000V DC | Solar DC SPD |
| 1500V DC | High-voltage PV SPD |
3. Verify Discharge Capacity
The discharge capacity determines how much surge current the SPD can safely handle.
| Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
| In (Nominal Discharge Current) | Indicates the SPD’s ability to withstand repeated surges |
| Imax (Maximum Discharge Current) | Maximum surge current the SPD can handle |
Higher surge environments require SPDs with larger discharge capacities.
4. Select the Right Installation Method
Most surge protective devices are designed for DIN rail installation, making them easy to install inside distribution panels and combiner boxes.
- What does an SPD do?
A surge protective device protects electrical systems from lightning strikes and voltage spikes.
- Do solar systems require surge protection?
Yes, surge protection is recommended to protect solar inverters and electrical equipment.
